Description

This hexagon and half hexagon motif pattern was designed for the Lavenham Blue yarn, dyed by Stuart of The Wool Patch. The yarn featured is a special plant-based yarn, made from paper and cotton, dyed with woad. There are also wool versions available.

I grew up in Hadleigh, Suffolk, UK, one of the Suffolk Wool Towns, famed for the wool trade that once made these towns very prosperous. Lavenham was another of the Wool Towns, famed for the Lavenham Blue Broadcloth, a woven cloth. The blue is created by dyeing with the plant woad (Isatis tinctoria). The colour starts out pale yellow, but with exposure to air, turns to green and then blue.

This pattern creates a hexagon and half hexagon, that you can then use to create your own items. The final round 6 is there as a finishing round if you use the hexagon as a standalone item, for example, as a coaster. However, if you would like to join the hexagons to make a garment or blanket for example, you may want to have more points of joining and slightly adjust that last round to utilise a join-as-you-go method.

Using this hexagon and half hexagon design, I went on to create the Lavenham Blue Hexi Tabard, which is available as a separate pattern.

Available in UK and US terms.
